Historic Gates and Food Streets: Lahore’s Urban Renewal Initiative

The Commissioner of Lahore, Muhammad Ali Randhawa, held a meeting a few days back. He discussed how to Urban Renewal the iconic MM Alam Road. The meeting held on directives of Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) Director Kamran Lashari. There is a proposal to use empty spaces on the roads to establish a food street.

Not only MM Alam Road, but the authorities also discussed the possibilities of consuming many other areas. It includes GC University Chowk, Anarkali Gawalmanding Food Street, and Urdu Bazar Chowk. The authorities discussed in the meeting that all these areas have a lot of free space and can be the best option to create recreational spots.

The WCLA representative revealed that MM Alam Road’s open areas and footpaths would transform into a urban renewal sit-out food street. Similar to the design used near the Lahore Fort and Badshahi Mosque. The project will also use areas now available in Main Market, Liberty Market, and Mall One.

A park similar to Greater Iqbal Park could be built on unoccupied land owned by the LDA and Irrigation Department close to the Noor Jahan and Jahangir tombs, running from G T Road to Ravi River. Furthermore, they also discussed the importance of restoring the 12 gates of Lahore to increase tourism here.
