Islamabad: A report issued by the United Nations (UN) Institute of Water, Environment, and Health has listed Pakistan among 23 countries that are ‘critically water insecure’.

The report emphasised that the water security of the country is deteriorating. The UN University’s Global Water Security 2023 Assessment shows that 33 nations from three regions have attained water security recently.

The study analyses the condition of water security in 186 nations impacting 7.8 billion people. The study’s findings are concerning, as 78% of the world’s population lives in water-stressed areas.

Moreover, it was revealed that more than half of the world’s population doesn’t have access to clean drinking water and sanitation. The news source mentioned that more than 70% population lack access to safe water. The survey disclosed that Sweden and many other European countries had been ranked as the most water-secure country.

Additionally, the report stated that thorough and reliable water quality evaluation at the national level remains a challenge. Home wastewater treatment still needs to be improved in Africa, most South American, and Asia-Pacific nations.
